Verizon Going Hard After Super Bowl Wireless Traffic

February 02, 2012

(SPORTS TECHNOLOGY)

Getting to go to the Super Bowl is a once in a lifetime experience. While getting to work with 4G LTE (News - Alert) networks isn’t nearly that rare and will only be more commonplace as we go on, the two events have something in common these days. Verizon (News - Alert) Wireless has announced an endeavor that will allow their customers to work with the new high speed wireless tech while enjoying the biggest football game of the year.

Verizon has struggled over the last year staying afloat, so it’s no wonder that the company is trying to seize on one of the most popular sporting events in the world. For the first time since Verizon launched its 4G LTE network it will actually be offered at the Super Bowl site.

This will allow fans who are on the Verizon network to download and upload images and videos at blazing speeds while also looking up information on their team. Verizon seems to be taking its standing as the official wireless provider of the NFL seriously as it has boosted its network in more than 30 venues in Indianapolis, the site of this year’s Super Bowl.

Verizon is even going so far as to deploy extra engineers to Indianapolis during the days leading up to the Super Bowl to wander around the stadium and make sure that the 4G network is actually running at 4G speeds.

Just in case the 4G network does struggle to maintain its speeds when the expected 150,000 visitors descend on the city, the company is bringing some backup by offering up the Verizon Wi-Fi Network. While some branded Wi-Fi networks are only made available to their particular customers, the Verizon Wi-Fi network will be made available for free for all wireless users.

This is, not surprisingly, the biggest rollout that any wireless provider has attempted during the Super Bowl. While some of this is simply because they are already partnered up with the NFL, there is obviously an attempt by the company to reintroduce itself to the country. Verizon is putting quite a few of its eggs in the Super Bowl basket and hoping that pays off for a lucrative 2012.
