Verizon Wireless Beefs Up Network for Penn State Football Fans

September 03, 2010

(SPORTS TECHNOLOGY)

Verizon Wireless, a reliable and large wireless voice and 3G data network that provides service to over 92 million customers, deployed Cell On Wheels near the Beaver Stadium of Penn State University.

The temporary cell site has been installed to offer additional network coverage and calling capacity for football season. This allows more customers to use the Verizon (News - Alert) Wireless network to make calls or use data applications concurrently during home football games.

Mark Frazier, the president of the Ohio/Pennsylvania/West Virginia Region of Verizon Wireless, stated that the Beaver Stadium of Penn State University is the nation’s second largest college stadium. It has a capacity for over 7,000 fans, and home game attendance records are consistently being broken. Cell On Wheels allow Verizon Wireless to meet the increase in call and data volume during the football season and to continue to offer its customers the reliable network service they've come to expect.

The COW is a fully operational cell site that’s powered by generator. Its call capacity is similar to a freestanding cell site. This service enhancement is part of the constant effort of Verizon Wireless to extend coverage, enhance capacity and improve its wireless voice and data network quality in the state of Pennsylvania and across the nation. These service enhancements boost value to consumers who are more and more depending on wireless devices to run their demanding lives and stay connected at home or on the move.

Headquartered in Basking Ridge, N.J., with 79,000 employees nationwide, Verizon Wireless has spent more than $1.1 billion since the year 2002 into its Pennsylvania network. This counts the $185 million investment in the year 2009. The company, a joint venture of Verizon Communications and Vodafone (News - Alert), has spent more than $60 billion across the country since it started to grow wireless voice and data coverage and add new services.
