The Internet Predicts Green Bay as Winner of the Super Bowl
(SPORTS TECHNOLOGY)
Conversations over the internet have correctly predicted the winner of the Super Bowl for at least four years. And if the same pattern continues, it looks like Sunday will be a very happy day for the cheese heads (fans) of Green Bay.
According to data collected by social media analysis company Infegy, the Super Bowl team discussed most during the month of January ended up taking home the Vince Lombardi trophy every year since 2008.
In 2009, the Steelers were mentioned in Super Bowl conversations forty-eight percent more frequently than their opponent the Arizona Cardinals (Infegy did not collect data before 2008). Justin Graves, Infegy CEO, said, "I don't think more buzz means more wins, it just seems likely that people would be talking more about the team that they believe likely to be the victor."
"People predicting winners in their own conversations in forums on Fantasy football leagues, things like that," he added.
When it comes to the gap between online discussion of the Packers and the Steelers is smaller than between any two Super Bowl teams the company has analyzed. In Super Bowl discussions, Green Bay was mentioned 12.28 percent of the time. Pittsburgh was mentioned 12.02 percent of the time.
In related news, Salesforce.com (News
- Alert) announced its first TV ads from the company slated to air before and after the 2011 Super Bowl’s halftime show next Sunday, February 6. Developed with the help of Black Eyed Peas front man, will.i.am, the advertisements are animated and will promote Salesforce.com’s highly successful messaging service, Chatter.
Chatter will allow employees who are not customers of Salesforce.com to use the service. The company will also launch the site chatter.com. The strategy employs the idea that users at non-Salesforce-using companies will use and love Chatter, and subsequently the businesses will upgrade to more complex versions of the software. To make that happen, Benioff stated, “We really need to launch Chatter.com in a big way. I can’t think of anything bigger to do than launch it at the Super Bowl.”
