Nike Teams Up with Fullpower-MotionX to Develop the First GPS iPhone and iPod Touch

September 10, 2010

(SPORTS TECHNOLOGY)

Nike and Fullpower-MotionX, the global leader for mobile sensing solutions, worked together for months to develop the first GPS and accelerometry-driven App for iPhone (News - Alert) and iPod touch. The application is now available on the iTunes App store. Nike+ GPS delivers the ultimate personal indoor and outdoor running experience by combining the built-in accelerometer with GPS.

In a press release, Stefan Olander, Vice President of Digital Sport at Nike, said, “We took great care in evaluating sensing technologies and found the MotionX™ technology platform to be superior.” Philippe Kahn, CEO of Fullpower-MotionX, said, “We are thrilled to be working with Nike to leverage the innovation of the MotionX technology platform into running. We look forward to the possibility of future collaborative projects.”

Fullpower was in news few months back when it launched MotionX-GPS HD exclusively designed and optimized for the iPad, fully leveraging the large high-definition display. MotionX-GPS embeds the functionality of an advanced GPS unit or chart plotter into an intuitive application that is ideal for outdoor activities such as walking, hiking, sailing, off-roading, flying, geocaching or exploring new places.

Nike was in news recently when activists opposed Nike's promotional ad for new WVU football uniforms. Activists that are trying to stop mountain top removal coal mining in Appalachia were angry with Nike's promotional ad for a new West Virginia football uniform that is designed as a tribute to the 29 victims of the Upper Big Branch mine explosion. The activists had problems with the image of a flat, treeless mountaintop, the sound of an explosion and the image of falling rock that is on the uniform. According to those opposed, the ad appears to be an endorsement of the controversial form of strip mining and misses a key point about the Massey Energy's Upper Big Branch explosion, which was that the mine which exploded was an underground operation.
