The Magical iPad: Can Make Even Soccer Less Stupefying

April 15, 2010

(WORLD CUP TECHNOLOGY)

We're pros here, so we can handle any assignment thrown our way, but when we were asked to evaluate The Gaffer's contention that the iPad can make soccer, the world's most boring sport, somewhat less stupefying, well, we did what seasoned pros do: Opened a beer or two and got to work.

"I'm not sure about you, but I often watch soccer games on television with a laptop either next to me or on my lap," Gaff writes. Don't worry, he can be sure about whether I'm watching soccer on television or not.

"I can check scores from other games, look up stats, jot down ideas for blog posts or watch games being televised live at the same time on FoxSoccer.tv," he says. Here, we can save you the time - the score's either 0-0 or 1-0 in favor of the team from somewhere near Uzbekistan.

Gaffer thinks there are five ways the iPad can "revolutionize" soccer. So do we. Here's our list:

  1. Give you something to do during the 98 percent of the game when there's nothing happening.
  2. Give you something to do during the 98 percent of the game when there's nothing happening.
  3. Give you something to do during the 98 percent of the game when there's nothing happening.
  4. Give you something to do during the 98 percent of the game when there's nothing happening.
  5. Give you something to do during the 98 percent of the game when there's nothing happening.

Number one on Gaffer's list, though, is "Video games." See? Agrees with our #1. Oh wait, he means "the Apple (News - Alert) iPad is a fantastic gaming device For software companies, it opens up the possibilities to take popular soccer games from the consoles and port them over to the iPad." He means you can play soccer games on the iPad. Which brings us back to our list.

Number two for the Gaff is "watching matches." We'll pass over this one in a respectful silence.

Number three: "Apps and more apps." Indeed - see #3 in our list above.

Number four is "Kindle killer. I own a Kindle and I love my Kindle, but the one thing I don't like about it is that it has no backlight so I can read books in bed, which is usually the only opportunity I get to read." Excuse me, you spend hours parked in front of a TV or at a stadium where nothing's happening and you don't have time to read?

And number five, "Online magazines." Which you don't even have to be at a soccer match to read. Isn't the iPad wonderful?
