TIC Summer Camp Bold Business Strategy to Close Gender Gap in STEM

ANNANDALE, Va., Dec. 10, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- TIC Summer Camp Inc., a Technology and Sports Camp with locations in the DC area, is utilizing a bold strategy to increase the number of female campers enrolling for their Summer Programs. Despite years of designing marketing specifically for girls and partnering with organizations that promote girls in STEM and Sports, TIC's female enrollment has hovered around 25%. In an effort to create a more permanent and timely solution, TIC Summer Camp will open registration for 2019 holding half of the spots at each location for girls.

This past summer, TIC piloted a girls club, GROW (Girls Rock Our World), that focused on validating the experiences of girls in the STEM and Athletics spheres, as well as helping female-identifying campers develop tools to navigate those industries. Through running the GROW Program it became apparent that, even at this pivotal point in our society, it is not realistic to have a fully inclusive and supportive environment for girls in STEM or Athletics when only one quarter of the participants in that community identify as female.

"We strongly believe that having a 50/50 gender ratio will greatly improve the learnig environment for all of our campers, as well as better preparing them to pursue their passions in STEM and Sports outside of the camp-setting," said Emily Riedel, Executive Director/Owner of TIC Summer Camp.

Leslie Keller, Communications Director adds, "We want our campers to be surrounded by girls succeeding in these fields so that girls can be encouraged to stick with STEM and Sports, and so that boys can be encouraged to respect women and girls in those roles."

In addition to reserving half the enrollments for female-identifying campers (which will be in effect from now until March 15th, 2019), TIC Summer Camp has also been fundraising scholarship money specifically for girls. During the month of October TIC participated in the American Camp Association's Camp Moves Me Fundraiser and raised over $4400 in scholarship funds. More information about scholarships can be found on their website.
