Samsung says it will ship 10 million Galaxy S IIIs by July

Jun 25, 2012 (Los Angeles Times - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Samsung says it expects to ship 10 million units of the Galaxy S III by next month, making it the company's fastest-selling phone of all time.

News of the Galaxy S III's feat comes after the phone made its U.S. debut last week. The Galaxy S III is Samsung's flagship phone with a 4.8-inch screen and the latest Android software. It is regarded as the latest possible iPhone killer.

The phone launched worldwide at the end of May, first shipping to Europe and the Middle East. It began shipping to users in South Korea on Monday.

JK Shin, Samsung's head of telecommunications business, announced the news of the approaching 10 million mark on Monday, according to Reuters. A total of 9 million pre-orders for the phone were placed with carriers around the world before it even began selling, according to PCWorld.

The Galaxy S III is available on all four of the U.S.'s major networks and 300 carriers worldwide. It launched last week on T-Mobileand Sprint, and it is expected to launch on Verizon and AT&T next month.

Generally, the phone is available for $200 with a two-year contract. It is available in 16 and 32 GB models, and it sports an HD screen. The phone comes with several hand-motion gesture features, and it has a feature called S Voice that is a rival to Apple's Siri for the iPhone.

Its predecessor, the Galaxy S II, sold 50 million times worldwide in the last two years.
