Fairfield University's Media Center Wins Numerous Awards for Live Broadcasts, Documentaries, Films and 'Stags Country'

(Targeted News Service Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) FAIRFIELD, Conn., Aug. 9 -- Fairfield University has issued the following news release: Fairfield University's Media Center continues to accumulate accolades from industry peers for its sophisticated productions. In the past month, the production staff has received multiple Videographer Awards and Telly Awards as well as a College Sports Media Award.

Several of the awarded producers are current and recent Fairfield graduates as well as alumni now on staff at the Media Center. The Media Center produces original video, audio and web-based programming with state-of-the-art equipment and facilities located on the Fairfield campus. They also serve as teachers and mentors to students enrolled in the University's New Media Film, Television and Radio program.

The Media Center received four Telly Awards, which is a widely known and respected competition that received more than 11,000 entries this year. "Echo's Wayward," a student production co-produced by 2010 Fairfield graduates Bob Cammisa and Dennis Donovan, received a Silver Telly statuette, the highest honor. The production is the first episode of a multiple-part science fiction mini-series designed to demonstrate an undergraduate ability to use advanced techniques in production and postproduction.

Three other productions received Bronze awards. They included "Behind the Scenes," a documentary about the broadcast of a Fairfield basketball game produced by New Media student Steve Bottari '11; "Sleepyhead," a story about a quirky six-year-old girl produced by Bridget Lake '04, digital media and TV producer at the Media Center and co-written by Lake, Casey Timmeny '99, external projects producer, Chris McGloin, media services specialist, and Brad Martocello, media assistant; and "The Prodigal Project," a documentary produced by Timmeny and David Grazynski '04, producer and broadcast coordinator. An outreach project to the Order of Malta Prison Volunteers of Connecticut, "The Prodigal Project" explored how members of this community organization assist those incarcerated in state prisons to reunite with their families and lead productive lives in their communities.

Six projects were awarded 2010 Videographer Awards, one of the most coveted awards in the video industry. Winners ranged from network news operations to local cable access operations. This year, there were 1,800 entries from throughout the United States and several other countries.

"Fairfield versus Siena College Uplink," and "The Prodigal Project," were both honored with an Award of Distinction, bestowed on projects that were found to exceed industry standards.

"Behind the Scenes," "Echo's Wayward," "Sleepyhead," and "Stags Country - Episode 3" were each honored with an Award of Excellence, bestowed on those projects the judges deemed were written, produced, shot and edited in an exceptional manner. "Stags Country," a 30-minute sports magazine series, offers a look at Fairfield Stags sports. It is a collaborative project of the Media Center, the University's Athletics Department, Sports Information, and students. Produced in conjunction with ABC Connecticut affiliate WTNH sports anchor, Noah Finz, each episode highlights extraordinary stories of University student athletes, coaches and alumni. The series is broadcast throughout Connecticut on WTNH and WCTX TV 9.

For the "January 30, 2010 Fairfield Men's Basketball team versus Rider University game," the Media Center was awarded a 2010 College Sports Media Award. The production won the Sony Award for Best Live Game or Event, first place in the Collegiate 1 Division category, besting fellow nominees the University of Arkansas, New Mexico State University, and Texas A & M University.

"We are excited for the entire crew," said Casey Timmeny, the game's producer and director. "A lot of effort was put into this production and it is an honor to be recognized for that effort at the national level." The Media Center produced the game for the Athletics Department. Production staff for the live broadcast also included members of the Athletics Department, Sports Information, as well as students. The uplink was produced live from the Arena at Harbor Yard, using the Media Center's mobile satellite uplink HD-TV broadcast truck staffed mostly by students. It was aired live on My9 Channel 59.
