Viaplay Deploys Envivio Muse Software-Based Encoding Solutions

October 05, 2012

Viaplay, a part of Modern Times Group and the premier online service for TV, film and sport on the Nordic market, recently selected Envivio’s (News - Alert) Muse software-based encoding solutions to enhance its service.

Headquartered in South San Francisco, California, Envivio is a well-known player in solutions for multi-screen video-over-IP delivery. The use of Envivio Muse Live software-based encoders on the 4Caster C4 Gen III platform will allow Viaplay to extend streaming of live channels to IP set-top-boxes and offer customers additional viewing options.

"We constantly strive to develop our service, and offering Viaplay on streaming STBs is part of our strategy to ensure that the widest possible audience is able to access our content, in the most convenient way," Niclas Ekdahl, CEO at Viaplay, said in a statement.

Officials at Viaplay said this deployment is one of the first large scale pay-TV projects in Europe to make use of linear over-the-top delivery to STBs.

Viaplay is also the first provider in Scandinavia to launch a full OTT solution with a low cost hybrid set-top-box, which can be availed by anyone with an Internet connection, the Viaplay Box (News - Alert).

Introduced in April, the streaming set-top-boxes helped customers to consume Viaplay's premium content on the big screen.

"Broadcasters no longer need to implement separate architectures for web and 'traditional' television distribution,” said Julien Signes (News - Alert), Envivio's president and CEO. “By embracing OTT and a streaming set-top box approach, Viaplay has shown that it recognizes the efficiency and scalability it offers both for delivery and storage and that IP is clearly going mainstream."

In related TMC (News - Alert) news, Envivio recently launched the new higher density 4Caster G4 encoding appliance for deploying the highest quality TV services to the home.
