UPS Partners with STATS LLC in Creating Team Performance Index for College Football

September 04, 2012

(SPORTS TECHNOLOGY)

Global logistics provider UPS, the official logistics partner of the NCAA, recently teamed up with sports technology, content and data company STATS LLC (News - Alert) to design the UPS Team Performance Index (TPI) for college football.

The Team Performance Index measures and tracks offense, defense and special teams comprehensively for the 120 NCAA Division teams, as well as the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) teams. The TPI includes 13 main statistical elements that has parallels to a team’s overall success.

The 13 elements are then combined in a way to create the Index that will rank the teams from highest to lowest.

To complete the design of the UPS Team Performance Index, STATS reviewed and used 10 years of the Football Bowl Subdivision’s statistical data to find a strong interconnection to the overall performance across all elements of the football game and towards winning.

To date, there is no other overall statistical algorithm like the Team Performance Index that ranks teams across the statistical categories of defense, offense and special teams.

“UPS is pleased to work with STATS to create the Team Performance Index, which will help demonstrate the impact of logistics in determining success on the playing field while underscoring our already strong association and support of collegiate athletics,” said UPS vice president Ron Rogowski.

The Team Performance Index has the following statistical components: Defense (yards allowed/play), Offense (yards/play), Special teams (opponent punt returns, punt returns, opponent kickoff returns, kickoff returns, field goal percentage and punting).

With each component, an index value is made that uses a proprietary algorithm. The scale ranges from 1 to 200, with 100 being the average. Rankings above 100 display strength and excellence in that particular area while rankings below 100 display weakness.

The statistical components are then added with the team’s win-loss ratio and reward the team that excels in all of the game’s facets.

Beginning Monday, September 17, the UPS Team Performance Index will be updated weekly throughout the remainder of the college football season.
