Third Annual ATSNJ Sports Safety Summit to Feature Tech, Health Talk

The Athletic Trainers' Society of New Jersey (ATSNJ) recently released the agenda for the Third Annual ATSNJ Sports Safety Summit. Discussion will range from technology, to rule enforcement, to new studies regarding concussions and other sports-related injuries.
On the technology side, for instance, a panel will address new helmet sensors which can detect the number and severity of hits a player endures during any sport or activity, sending results to an accompanying phone app. Meanwhile, a new helmet cap recently released which apparently diminishes the force of a hit is not being implemented by helmet manufacturers as they say it takes away from a helmet's mechanics.
The U.S. Army has embraced impact sensor technology with no reservations, ordering thousands of the sensors to record the severity of head movements and impacts during a combat-related blast or explosion.
Evidently, while the sensors, called Headborne Energy Analysis and Diagnostic Systems (HEADS), may be ideal for military use, their usage in sports may continue to be limited for quite some time.
Meanwhile, ATSNJ data that suggests female soccer players have a higher incidence of concussion when heading the ball will be discussed, along with the fact that incidents of concussions in this group have risen in New Jersey by 26 percent compared to the previous year.
Other health issues to be discussed include sudden cardiac death and heat issues, which have been a serious concern this summer, as well as skin cancer.
Concussion panelists attending the event include: Michael Goodman, MD, the head of Pediatrics at Cooper Hospital; Jason Mihalik PhD, ATC, Mathew Gfellar Center, UNC; Margot Putukian, MD, Princeton University; Ruben Echemendia PhD, Neuropsychologist, State College, PA; and Jeffrey Kutcher, MD, Neurologist University of Michigan and Chairman of the Sports Neurology section of the American Neurological Association.
The summit takes place on Wednesday, August 1 from 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Those unable to attend can still watch the entire event live here.
