Wimbledon 2012 to be Fully Connected with Android Coverage

June 21, 2012

(SPORTS TECHNOLOGY)

While it's nothing new for a major sporting event to feature plenty of live Internet and mobile-based coverage, Wimbledon 2012 will stand as yet another example of how connected technology has changed sports reporting. With websites, apps and live audio and video streams, tennis fans the world over will have 24-hour access to this year's tournament.

As proof, here are four separate – and free – Android apps dedicated to staying up-to-date on the event:

Wimbledon Grand Slam Tennis is exactly the type of app one would expect for any sporting event; it features the latest news, scores, results, schedule and more, allowing users to stay in the know about practically every aspect of the tournament. Wimbledon Grand Slam Tennis is a lot like last year's Pocket Wimbledon app, which was available on Android (News - Alert) and iOS devices, but provides even more coverage with photos, stats, player profiles and even a chat room.

Wimbledon Radio is another obvious and useful addition to this lineup. The app provides users with direct access to a variety of live broadcasts from Wimbledon during the tournament. It also allows users to listen to post-match player podcasts. Wimbledon Radio also includes news, results, score and match schedules, making it similar to Grand Slam Tennis but aimed at more audio-centric fans.

ATP (News - Alert)/WTA Live is the official app of the ATP World Tour and World Tennis Association, and as such provides year-round tennis coverage. However, ATP/WTA Live doesn't cover Grand Slam tournaments like Wimbledon so it's more of a complement to the other apps on this list. Again, you'll find live stats, draws, rankings, player bios and more here – plenty to satisfy any tennis fan.

Lastly, USTA.TV is the official app of the United States Tennis Association, the governing body of tennis in the U.S. This app is a lot like the ATP/WTA Live app but, obviously, has a U.S. focus, making it another great companion app for the others on this list.

If getting direct coverage on your mobile phone isn't enough, car rental company Hertz, the official transport provider of Wimbledon, will be providing full filmed interviews with players as they make their way through the tournament. Footage will be uploaded daily to www.wimbledon.com.
