(OLYMPICS TECHNOLOGY)

Atos, an IT services company and IT partner for the Olympic Games, announced Monday their intention to purchase a 50 percent stake in MSL Group, provider of real-time results and information systems for sporting events.

Both Atos and MSL Group have long been involved in the sports and other events IT industry and first began their relationship in 1992 at the Barcelona Summer Olympics.

“Today’s announcement marks a major milestone in our strategy to be the global IT leader for major events. We have a strong heritage in this specialized IT, having delivered 50 successful global events worldwide since 1989,” said Patrick Adiba, chief executive officer at Atos.

“By joining forces with MSL Group, we have a strengthened portfolio that will ensure our business technologists can continue to write history for sporting and major events around the world and that as a business we increase our market share as well as value from each deal.”

According to a source for Computing, MSL has an annual turnover of 15 million Euros and in order to acquire 50 percent stake in the company, Atos purchased it for nearly 22 million Euros.

The deal is expected to close by March 31 and also includes an option for Atos to purchase the full company of MSL Group.

Atos stated that the new combined portfolio provides the full range of services required to stage a sports event from timing and scoring to Information Diffusion Systems that distribute the results to international media, news agencies, websites and TV graphics.

A spokesperson for Atos explained that MSL has an entirely different customer base including “the Masters and Wimbledon and Atos will benefit from this.”

Founder of MSL Group, Jose Alberto Jaen shared his excitement by stating: “I am delighted to be working with Atos, a recognized leader in the IT sports industry. Our experience and expertise is extremely complementary and I am very excited that through this deal, we will have the opportunity to support some of the biggest sporting events in the world.”

In other news related to Atos, CEO Thierry Breton announced their intention to be email free in three years, as reported by TMCnet. Instead the company will replace the system with more efficient social community platforms.
