Docker Announces Federated Application Management Across Multi-Cloud Environments With Docker Enterprise Edition

DockerCon 2018 - Docker today announced new capabilities for Docker Enterprise Edition (EE), the leading enterprise-ready container platform, and Docker Desktop, an easy-to-install desktop environment for building applications, that extend the development and secure management of containerized applications on premises and across multiple clouds. Federated application management, a new capability available on Docker EE, provides a single management plane to automate the management and security of containerized applications on premises and across hosted Kubernetes-based cloud services including Azure AKS, AWS EKS and Google (News - Alert) GKE. With Docker EE, IT operations have an aggregated view and automated model for deploying, migrating and replicating applications. Additionally, organizations can centrally control and secure the software supply chain to provide a single "source of truth" for their entire containerized application portfolio.

"With an estimated 85 percent of today's enterprise IT organizations employing a multi-cloud strategy, it has become more critical that customers have a 'single pane of glass' for managing their entire application portfolio," said Scott Johnston, Chief Product Officer at Docker. "Docker Enterprise Edition delivers on the promise of the cloud by offering customers the portability benefits of containerized applications and the management of those containerized applications across all infrastructure. Additionally, Docker EE is the only container platform to manage and secure both legacy and modern applications in Linux, Windows and multi-cloud customer environments, offering customers unparalleled choice and the flexibility to evolve their environments as their business requirements change."

In addition to federated application management, Docker is previewing two other new capabilities:

  • In keeping with its leadership in Windows containers, Docker is announcing Windows Server containers on Kubernetes in Docker Enterprise Edition.
  • Docker is also extending the power of containerization to a broader range of enterprise developers with new template-based workflows for Docker Desktop.

Portable application management on premises and across multiple clouds

The rise of containers has helped make applications more portable but the management of these containers is not. With the increasing global nature of business, most organizations have more than three clods brought on by shadow IT and geographic distribution needs. Each cloud-based application infrastructure and on-prem data center silo is managed under a separate operational model, resulting in high cost and inefficiencies. With data sovereignty issues and the emergence of cloud-hosted Kubernetes services, the problem is exacerbated as there is no common operating model or security framework across the clouds.

Docker Enterprise Edition is uniquely positioned to deliver federated application management by treating the enterprise's entire application portfolio uniformly across all environments. With Docker Enterprise Edition, you can make strategic decisions to deploy apps for economic reasons, to provide high availability or to utilize the cloud provider's specific services. Docker Enterprise Edition is the only container platform that provides this flexibility by offering choice, security and agility:

  • Freedom of choice: The Docker container platform is not tied to a single OS or VM model and provides choice across all cloud providers. Only Docker supports all leading cloud-hosted Kubernetes services.
  • Security: Docker Enterprise Edition secures control of an organization's applications and the ability to audit every step in the application delivery process. Docker EE includes Docker Trusted Registry, a centralized and federated source of truth for content of enterprise-grade image management and integrated security policies across clouds.
  • Agile (News - Alert) operations: Standardization means speed and savings with faster development and faster scalability. Docker Enterprise Edition accelerates onboarding with a uniform operating model for applications across clouds with the enforcement of application lifecycle policies.

Docker demonstrates Windows Server containers in Kubernetes with Docker Enterprise Edition

Docker continues to drive innovation and adoption of Windows Server containers in collaboration with Microsoft by enabling organizations to use Kubernetes for orchestrating .NET (News - Alert) and Windows Server-based applications with Docker Enterprise Edition. Docker provides more choices for organizations as Docker EE is the only enterprise-ready container platform that supports production-grade Linux and Windows containers and dual orchestration options with Swarm and Kubernetes across those mixed environments. Demand for Windows containers among Docker's customers is continuing to grow with more than 50 percent using Windows containers for modernizing legacy apps.

Docker unveils template-based workflows for Docker Desktop to extend containerization to a broader range of enterprise developers

To date, millions of developers are using Docker Desktop, with more than a million new users leveraging Docker Desktop in the last year alone. Furthering Docker's mission to continue to make containerization technology easier to use, the company has channeled the best practices from its developer installed base to provide a template-based workflow that makes Docker even more accessible to the broader market. These new templates presented via a GUI allow developers to create new containerized applications without requiring them to learn Docker commands or write Dockerfiles and Compose files from scratch - bringing the agility benefits of Docker even more quickly to those using it.

This template-based approach will also evolve to support greater collaboration by allowing teams to share their own best practices within their organization.
