Scandy Takes Tango from Toy to a Tool

NEW ORLEANS, June 27, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Scandy, a computer vision and mobile 3D scanning company, turns Google's AR/VR and room-mapping platform, Tango, into a 3D object scanner with the release of Scandy Pro. Going beyond Tango's usual Augmented Reality games and apps, Scandy Pro produces full-color 3D object scans from the Phab 2 Pro. While other Tango apps might scan the walls of a room, Scandy Pro creates usable meshes of the objects inside that room.

Most other apps for Tango utilize Tango's core technologies: Motion Tracking, Area Learning, and Depth Perception to create AR/VR apps. While Tango has a 3D Reconstruction Library, it provides the ability to create environment scans with a resolution appropriate to room scanning. The Scandy team has leveraged its own 3D scanning algorithms coupled with Tango's robust tracking to scan objects at a higher resolution than other Tango apps are able to accomplish. Tango's 3D Reconstruction provides a maximum resolution of about 1 cm, while using Scandy Core's GPU-optimized pipeline, candy Pro's maximum resolution is about 1 mm. This is a vital difference for creators looking to make the next great AR and VR experience. Scandy Pro's versatility and ease-of-use mean that it is perfect for the entry-level 3D scanning enthusiast or as a companion piece for a $10,000+ industrial-grade scanner.

"We've been working on Scandy Core to make high-resolution object scanning available on mobile devices for years now, and we are thrilled to bring our expertise to Tango-enabled devices," says Scandy co-founder Cole Wiley. "The Scandy team is looking forward to seeing what great content the Tango user community can create with new the Scandy Pro app," adds Scandy co-founder Charles Carriere.

Scandy's 3D scanning middleware, Scandy Core, is the backbone of the technology featured in the Scandy Pro app. It is a fully customizable, sensor-agnostic 3D scanning middleware that can be integrated into any professional project that requires the use of 3D modeling, depth sensing, AR/VR, or CAD software. Scandy is currently integrating Scandy Core into projects for global companies.

"Thank you so much—This is the very first app that delivers this ability to [create] close distance and higher quality meshes." adds Scandy Pro user Robert Reichert.

About Scandy
New Orleans-based Scandy is a computer vision and mobile 3D scanning company. Their mission is to develop the easiest and best way to create 3D content from a smartphone. Scandy's first 3D scan to full-color 3D print app, which launched in March 2015, used the Structure Sensor and iPad to capture 3D scans. From there, they continued work on their depth sensing and 3D scanning technology. In June 2017, that work culminated in the release of the Scandy Pro 3D scanning app. Visit Scandy's website for more information.
