Barry University to Host 18th World Congress for the International Association of Physical Education and Sport for Girls and Women


The International Association of Physical Education and Sport for Girls and Women (IAPESGW) will be hosting its 18th World Congress May 17 - 21, 2017 at Barry University, in Miami Shores, Florida. This is the first time the World Congress has been hosted in the United States since 1961.

IAPESGW was founded in 1949 to provide the opportunity for physical educators and sports coaches and practitioners to come together and share their ideas, methods, programs, problems, and solutions on an international platform.

"We have a robust schedule of workshops designed to inspire and motivate professionals working in the field of sport for girls and women," said Dr. Kathryn Ludwig, Associate Professor of Biomechanics at Barry University. "We will be sharing research and exchanging ideas to improve the position of girls and women, particularly in developing nations and among refugee populations."



The central theme of the congress will be "Women and Girls in Sport: Research to Action" with four subthemes: pedagogy of physical education, sport, and dance, lifelong physical activity for all, global to local initiatives and assessment and sport sciences.

Speakers include:


  • Jayne Greenburg, PhD, Miami, Florida, USA - Director of Physical Education and Health Literacy, Miami Dade County Schools and Member of the President's Council on Fitness, Sports & Nutrition
  • Clare Hanlon, PhD, Melbourne, Australia - Associate Professor, Sport Management, Victoria University and Sport Management Discipline Leader, College of Sport & Exercise Science
  • Ana Maria Miragaya, PhD, Petrópolis, Brazil - Professor of Physical Education, Universidade Estácio de Sá, Campus Petrópolis and Selection Committee Member, International Olympic Committee

As part of the congress, on May 20 the association will host a dinner to present the "Women in Sport Achievement Award." This year, the Mistress of Ceremonies will be Anita Marks from ESPN (News - Alert) TV, and the recipients of the award are: Lesley Visser, Hall of Fame Sportscaster and Rennae Stubbs, Broadcaster & Former #1 Doubles Tennis Player.
