Georgetown University's John Thompson Jr. Intercollegiate Athletic Center Now Offering Impact Whole Body Cryotherapy

The newly opened John R. Thompson Jr. Intercollegiate Athletic Center at Georgetown University is giving its student-athletes a new competitive advantage by offering them access to state-of-the-art, whole body cryotherapy equipment, also known as a cryosauna.

Impact Cryotherapy is the leader in designing and manufacturing cryosaunas, which are used worldwide by athletes and others to complement fitness regimens as well as health and wellness initiatives.

With its official gala opening ceremony scheduled for October 6, the 144,000-square-foot, $62 million John R. Thompson Jr. Intercollegiate Athletic Center has been designed as a state-of-the-art facility to house the practice courts for the men's and women's basketball team, as well as sports medicine and strength and training facilities, an academic center and a spacious equipment area.

The Thompson Athletic Center is named for Georgetown's legendary Hall of Fame basketball coach, who won 596 games, led the Hoyas to the 1984 National Championship, three Final Four appearances and to 13 BIG EAST Championships, seven regular season and six tournament titles.

"Our partnership with Impact Cryotherapy is appreciated on many levels," Georgetown Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Lee Reed said. "It is consistent with our mission of offering the best possible care for our student-athletes and it allows us to offer cutting-edge technology that was not previously available. Our sports medicine team and athletics administration will continue to explore research, partnerships and technology to more effectively and efficiently care for all 750 of our student-athletes."

Whole body cryotherapy isa high-tech ice bath where users stand in the cryosauna filled with nitrogen vapor at temperatures between -90°C to -120°C for up to three minutes. Unlike the wet-cold of an ice-bath, cryotherapy is a dry, painless cold.

"While the medical research community is still evaluating claims regarding whole body cryotherapy's lasting physical effects, cryotherapy is claimed by many who have experienced it as providing an invigorating, euphoric experience and is used as an alternative to traditional ice baths," Georgetown Assistant Athletics Director for Student-Athlete Health and Wellness Shawn Hendi said. "We were eager to offer cryotherapy to our student-athletes due to its popularity among a wide range of fitness enthusiasts and athletes around the globe. Impact Cryotherapy has the premier reputation among manufacturers of cryosaunas and we were happy to work with them to make this a reality."

Richard E. Otto, Impact Cryotherapy's Chief Executive Officer and co-founder, said, "We are delighted to work with Georgetown University in bringing cryotherapy to this major Division I school for the benefit of all those involved with its celebrated athletic programs. We look forward to working with the Thompson Athletics Center to ensure that Georgetown student-athletes derive the maximum benefit from this unique form of therapy."
