20th Annual Komen Sacramento Race for the Cure


Susan G. Komen Sacramento Valley is counting down the hours until the 20th anniversary of its annual Race for the Cure. The milestone anniversary race will honor the survivors and their families, as well as those who have made a significant impact in the Komen community. This year's fundraising goal is to raise half a million dollars, which will benefit all of Komen's community programs and continuing to find an end to breast cancer.

WHAT: Since 1996, the Komen Sacramento Valley affiliate with proceeds from Race for the Cure has invested close to $20 million in the 19 county service area and focuses on breast cancer education, screening and diagnostic services and support services. Over the past 20 years, thousands of participants have take millions of steps toward fighting breast cancer.

WHO: Breast cancer survivors and their families, supporters of the race, sponsors, over 500 volunteers and those running in remembrance of a loved one will all be present. Those available for interviews include:

  • Race for the Cure Director, Chris Hollingsworth
  • Dr. Darryl Hunter, Radiation Oncologist, Circle of Promise Ambassador and Health Advocate

  • Several Race for the Cure Heroes including New Balance Honorary Team Member Belinda Paris who was selected as Sacramento 2016 winner.

WHEN: Saturday, May 7

  • 7:00 a.m. Survivor Reception for race participants and Team Meet-up
  • 7:50 a.m. Survivor Processional
  • 8:00-8:30 a.m. Survivor Program, Pre Race Countdown and West Coast Ravens fly over.
  • 9 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. Post-race expo

PRE-RACE

Pre-race survivor reception with a fly over by the West Coast Ravens. Seventy members and coaches of the Sacramento State football team. Over 200 local cheer squad members, Award-winning Grant Union High School drum, Tina B Soul dancers and Daughters of Christ Gospel performing "Walking in Confidence" for the survivors. Sacramento River Cats mascot Dinger. Costumed characters from the 501st Legion - the Central California Garrison of Star Wars and other Super Heroes.

COURSE & FINISH

Bands including 2016 Sammy Award Artist of the Year Some Fear None and four radio stations. Over 200 home-made signs on course of encouragement and hope from local youth groups, Taco Bell Hero Hill with a raucous cowbell and noise maker welcome to the participants. Finish line snacks. Post Race Expo with Komen merchandise, samples and Komen community grantees.

PINK PLATE and AB1795 - support the EVERY WOMAN COUNTS PROGRAM

Orders of the California Pink Ribbon License Plate (pinkplate.org) provide funds for free clinical breast exams and mammograms through the Department of Health Care Services "Every Woman Counts" program - potentially saving the lives of countless California women. This year, Komen is excited to be sponsoring AB 1795 a bill authored by Assembly Speaker Emeritus Toni Atkins that will expand the Every Woman Counts screening and treatment program to woman under 40, provide cancer treatment as long as needed, and not deny coverage for women with recurrence of breast cancer.
