Marianne Wait
Executive Editor
SafeBee.com
Wait has been producing content that informs and inspires for more than 20 years, with a deep focus on bringing readers accurate, actionable advice and helping them live healthier, safer lives. Before launching SafeBee, she was executive editor of Sharecare, the health website and social network. Previously, she developed more than two dozen illustrated consumer health books for Reader's Digest. Her writing has appeared in numerous outlets including Arthritis Today and WebMD. Her favorite safety tip: Know the purpose of every medication you take and under what circumstances you can stop taking it.
SafeBee is a relatively new digital locale for credible, science-based information about health, wellness, sustainability and safety, a collaboration of global safety science/education giant UL, Underwriters Laboratories, and MNN, the world's most visited environmental website. SafeBee's mission, simply put, is to make the world a safer place. With every original content article, tool and piece of advice offered, the site strives to provide the information people need to protect their family, home, pets, money and personal data from everyday -- and unexpected -- threats and hazards so they can live happier, healthier, more secure lives. Whether it's sharing updates about the air we breathe in our homes, on a plane or even in the gym, or something we need to know about the cars we drive, the products we use, a medicine or supplement we take, or a food or drink we consume (or give our cats or dogs), SafeBee informs.

Pedestrian/Cyclist Safety
Chuck Gruber
President and COO
Safe Reflections, Inc.
Spring and summer are prime times for outdoor activities, but an increase in evening activity also brings added safety concerns. In the U.S., a pedestrian is injured in a traffic crash every eight minutes and, according to the National Safety Council, the chances of being struck and killed as a pedestrian increase 1,100 percent after dark. Helping outdoor and fitness enthusiasts sharing the road with cars be seen more clearly and from greater distances in the dark and in low-light conditions is a critical component of safety. Says Gruber: "Seventy percent of pedestrian fatalities occur during low-light or nighttime hours, and existing safety measures alone often aren't effective means for getting drivers to slow and stop. Adding high-brightness reflective material to garments and accessories can provide an enhanced level of safety." High-brightness reflective technology is changing the way consumers look at reflective material. Available in a variety of colors, newer high-brightness reflective material won't be noticed during the day, but can be seen from 300 to 500 feet away because it's designed to reflect a headlight back toward the driver of a motor vehicle from any angle. The technology uses millions of retroreflective glass beads to magnify and redirect light from long distances, ensuring pedestrians and cyclists are "seen and safe" when walking or riding in low-light conditions.
A New Jersey native, Gruber earned his chemical engineering degree from New Jersey Institute of Technology and his MBA in marketing from Temple University Fox School of Business and Management. He has more than 30 years of experience and has served in production, product innovation, supply-chain logistics and finance leadership roles for several prominent manufacturing companies serving the textile technology and safety industries. In 2011, Gruber received the Chairman's Health and Safety Award from specialty engineering company IMI. In 2005, Gruber earned the Chairman's Award from GAF Materials Corporation for his safety improvement efforts.

Car Safety
Preventing Hot Car Deaths
Latrice Hickman
Chief Program Operations and Compliance Officer
Childhelp
In the U.S., five children die every day from abuse and neglect. Says Hickman: "Temperatures inside vehicles can quickly increase even in moderate weather. In only 70-degree weather with overcast skies, a child left in a car is at risk for heatstroke and death. Under no circumstances should a child ever be left in a car for any amount of time."
Hickman shares these five tips to prevent leaving children in the car: 1) Place an object that reminds you of your child in the front seat next to you; this will remind you they are in the back seat. 2) Place your lunch, briefcase, wallet, phone, or purse in the seat next to your child; you will need to access the back seat before leaving your car. 3) For longer trips and before driving, set an alarm on your phone to remind you to check the car. 4) Use the buddy system. Assign an adult passenger to remind you a child is in the car. This is especially helpful when infants or sleeping children are present. 5) Develop the habit of physically checking all doors upon exiting your vehicle.
Hickman is the chief program operations and compliance officer for Childhelp, the nation's oldest and largest nonprofit advocating for abused and neglected children. She is based in Phoenix.

Internet Safety
Katie L. Greer
CEO/Presenter, Greer Consulting
Outreach Coordinator, Vermont Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force
In February of 2005, Greer began developing an Internet safety program to deliver to Massachusetts students. The Corruption, Fraud and Computer Crime Division of the Attorney General's Office was inundated with requests for Internet safety presentations, and Greer rose to the challenge of expanding the existing program she created. After leaving the Attorney General's Office, Katie worked full time as an Intelligence Analyst for the Massachusetts State Police, where she was assigned to the Missing Children Clearinghouse. Concurrently, and in large part due to the increasing demands for technology/Internet safety education, Greer built her programs into a private business, which included seven different presentations spanning grades K-12 and college, that she tailored to accommodate the developmental and emotional differences in each age group. Additionally, she instructs parents, teachers, administrators, and law enforcement officials on Internet Safety and issues pertaining to technology. She travels the country speaking on issues of technology and Internet safety education, and was featured in USA Today, Vanity Fair Magazine and on CNN. She has presented at hundreds of schools, organizations, and conferences (law enforcement and otherwise) in the past seven years. She has contracted with the Vermont Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force and the United States Attorney's Office (Burlington, Vt.) to create, deliver and manage outreach programs for the state of Vermont. She was recently named as an Advisory Board Member for The Internet Keep Safe Coalition (iKeepSafe), a nonprofit international alliance of policy leaders, educators, law enforcement members, technology experts, public health experts and advocates that creates positive resources for parents, educators and policymakers who teach youths how to use new media devices and platforms in safe and healthy ways. Youth Sports and Concussion Safety
Frank Fiume
Founder and CEO
I9 Sports
"The youth sports market is a multi-billion-dollar-a-year industry encompassing 42 million participants annually, but many leagues adopt a win-at-all-costs mentality, which is harmful not only psychologically, but physically. This destructively competitive, highly political culture can turn sports into a negative experience for kids and can hold dangerous physical risks including concussions."
Fiume is the founder and CEO of I9 Sports, which is committed to raising national awareness about concussion safety in youth sports and strives to provide members a safe and fun environment that encourages kids to play to have fun, not be the next draft pick. He is available to discuss the risks and hazards when safety is not properly prioritized in youth sports and how concussion safety can be increased in leagues by offering only flag football (no tackle) and allowing no heading in soccer. Additionally, since i9 Sports is a national league, local franchise owners may be able to speak to provide expert local comment for media outlets.

Treadmill Safety
Chan Gannaway
Certified Personal Trainer and Fitness Education Director
Orangetheory Fitness
"With the recent media discussions about treadmill safety and the unfortunate and fatal event regarding the Facebook executive, here are five tips for a safe treadmill training experience: 1) Work at intensities where you feel under control; 2) Identify where the emergency stop button or cord is located; 3) Do not jump onto the rails while training on the treadmill; 4) Keep your eyes and head forward at all times. If you turn your head, your body tends to follow; 5) Do not leave your treadmill running to exit the treadmill for any reason."
Gannaway is a certified personal trainer and the fitness education director at OTF, a national fitness franchise with more than 200 studios and the only one that uses heart rate monitors while people are strength training and working out on treadmills.
