Melanoma Survivor to Distribute Sunscreen to Thousands of Fans Converging on Verizon Super Bowl Central

Twelve-year melanoma survivor Tara Beye will spend the Saturday before Super Bowl XLIX distributing sunscreen to the tens of thousands of fans convening on Verizon (News - Alert) Super Bowl Central.

"We must educate the masses about the importance of skin cancer prevention, and this is the perfect opportunity," said Tara Beye. "Even if it is overcast, according to the Skin Cancer Foundation, 80 percent of the sun's UV rays can pass through clouds. It's these cloudy days that can sneak up on us, and we must encourage people to establish healthy habits."

To start the conversation, dozens of sunscreen dispensers will line Verizon Super Bowl Central as part of the Cancer Treatment Centers of America® (CTCA) partnership with the Arizona Super Bowl Host Committee. This partnership provides a unique platform from which CTCA® will educate the tens of thousands of fans about health, wellness and cancer prevention - specifically skin cancer prevention, one of the most common, but one of the most preventable cancer types.

"We want people to know that the simple act of applying this sunscreen, when coupled with limiting sun exposure, can protect them from developing skin cancer," said Dr. Walter Quan, Jr., Chief of Medical Oncology and Director of Immunotherapy, CTCA at Western Regional Medical Center. "Melanoma, the most serious form of skin cancer, is typically curable if caught early, but it is more likely than other skin cancer to spread if left untreated."

According to the American Academy of Dermatology, melanoma incident rates have been increasing for the last 30 years. This year, it is estimated that one in 50 Americans will develop melanoma in their lifetime, and Caucasians and men older than 50 are at a higher risk of developing melanoma than the general population.

"If I can educate even one person and save even one life, it will be time very well spent," added Beye.
