Walker Elementary receives grant from Extreme Networks

(ENP Newswire Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) ENP Newswire - 28 July 2014 Release date- 25072014 - CANTON-Walker Elementary School teachers will soon be better equipped to incorporate technology into their lessons.

The school was awarded a $54,635 grant from Extreme Networks, a California based company in conjunction with the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Canton Local Schools officials accepted the grant from David Baker, the Executive Director of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, and a Extreme Networks representative last week.

The grant will provide Walker with Wi-Fi and internal networks in addition to a strong Internet connection, according to a Pro Football Hall of Fame release. Extreme Networks will provide the equipment for the technology.

The school had previously been using an old network which lacked a firewall. The grant will enables teachers to use technology in a way the old network prevented them from doing.

'What I believe this grant will do is speed up our connectivity to make it seamless as teachers design high tech work and as students work in the tech environment,' Canton Local Superintendent Kim Redmond said.

Nick Stepanovich, the education strategist for Canton Local, said the equipment will eventually lead to innovative ways of learning for students.

'It is an upgrade to our current infrastructure that will replace our current wireless access points and networking equipment,' Stepanovich said. 'This will increase the speed and ease of access for our students and teachers to connect to the internet.

'The hope is the upgrade will allow more connections via distance learning and allow teachers to seamlessly integrate technology into their lesson design.Another benefit is that it will provide us with a solid foundation to access the new online assessments coming this spring.' Extreme Networks partnered with the Pro Football Hall of Fame as a way to reach out to schools.

'Our work with Extreme Networks, through our Heart of a Hall of Famer Series, has focused on educational outreach to provide students the opportunity to engage and learn from legendary Heroes of the Game about how to achieve success on and off the football field,' Baker said via release.

Jonathan Kidwell, the education director for Extreme Networks, added via release: 'In a district, such as Canton (Local), that is committed to continuous improvement, it was critical that they reevaluate their IT infrastructure.

'We're thrilled to help Walker Elementary School update its outdated network with one that allows teachers and students to use their existing devices more efficiently and effectively.' (c) 2014 Electronic News Publishing -
