Local papers take home hardware

DES MOINES, Feb 09, 2013 (The Hawk Eye - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Area newspapers fared well as the annual Iowa Newspaper Association and Associated Press Media Editors awards were presented Friday.

In the 2012 Iowa APME Newswriting and Photo Contest, The Hawk Eye, in a category of newspapers with a circulation of between 10,001 and 50,000, won seven awards, including two first-place honors by photographer John Lovretta: -- Spot News Photos, second place, John Gaines, "Surviving the heat" -- General News Photos, first place, Lovretta, "Together for Krista" -- General News Photos, third place, Lovretta, "Happy Graduate" -- Business Photos, first place, Lovretta, "Logging On" -- Business Photos, second place, Lovretta, "School Work" -- Picture Story, third place, Gaines, "Long journey for Whitmore" -- Sports Feature (Photo), second place, Gaines, "Surviving the heat" As for INA recognition, in the category of newspapers with a circulation of 10,000 or more, The Hawk Eye won two awards: --Best Slideshow, third place.

--Best Breaking News Photo, third place, Gaines.

In the category of papers with a circulation of 9,999 or less, the Fort Madison Daily Democrat won five awards: --Community Leadership, second place.

--Best Headline Writing, first place.

--Best Ad Featuring Furniture, Furnishings, Appliances or Hardware, second place.

--Best Special Section Advertising, second place.

--Best Agricultural Advertising, first place.
