Oakdale boys prevail against Panthers
Dec 21, 2012 (Los Banos Enterprise (Los Banos - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Pacheco's boys basketball team came up a few points short in the final second of a 55-48 loss to Oakdale last Friday.
The Mustangs, a similarly fast-paced, athletic team, led most of the game, but Pacheco's Edgar Iglesias pulled the Panthers to within 3 (51-48) with a bucket off a Lakhan Patel steal with just 20 seconds remaining.
But Oakdale's Devin Donahue hit four straight free throws to seal the game as Pacheco fouled to get the ball back in the last couple of possessions. Meanwhile, Pacheco's last two 3-point attempts fell by the wayside.
Pacheco made it a 1-point game (21-20) early in the second half on a Le'Andre Wright jump shot, and Patel later tied it 30-30 on a jump shot from just inside the 3-point line. But an Austin Archuletta 3-pointer gave Oakdale the lead for good.
Oakdale led by as much as 12 midway through the fourth quarter before Pacheco fought back.
Oakdale guard Archuletta led all scorers with 21 points (including a pair of 3-pointers), followed by Donahue with 20. Daniel Marquez (with a pair of 3-pointers himself) led the Panthers with 16.
Pacheco hit the road to the Tracy Holiday Classic this week, opening with a 63-62 win over Tracy on Monday, followed by a 65-53 loss to Kimball on Tuesday. The Panthers followed with a 78-71 win over Enochs in the consolation bracket on Wednesday.
Results of Thursday's game was unavailable at press time. The Panthers (4-3) return home today for a showdown with Gustine (0-10) before opening league play Jan. 2.
Los Banos High's only action of the week was a 64-23 loss to Riverbank on Tuesday. LB's Isaac Ruiz and Delvonte Moore each hit one 3-pointer, while Riverbank's Rolaun Dunham led Riverbank with 14 points.
Los Banos dropped to 1-6, while Riverbank improved to 7-1.
