Sporting events postponed due to Newtown tragedy
Dec 14, 2012 (New Haven Register - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- The Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference, which governs high school sports in the state, is allowing officials from individual schools to decide whether they want to postpone games today or Saturday as a result of the shooting tragedy in Newtown.
As of 2:30 p.m., schools throughout the state were postponing games. Newtown and surrounding schools have postponed games today and Saturday and Naugatuck Valley League officials have decided to postpone their games as well. The Sheehan at Notre Dame-West Haven boys basketball game tonight (Friday) has been postponed indefinitely and the Shelton at Hamden boys basketball game has been postponed to Saturday at 5 p.m.
SCC commissioner Al Carbone said he did not expect any other schools in his conference to postpone events. He did say several schools playing host to events were planning to hold a moment of silence prior to competiton.
"We're monitoring the situation very closely at this time," Niehoff said. "We are aware of the number of casualties and it's awful. We're all speechless. We won't be forcing schools to postpone their games, that will be up to each individual school. We will support any decisions the schools make.
"Had this been tournament time, that would be a different story and we more than likely would have postponed all games. Because this is the regular season, we have not issued forced cancellations statewide. We do know that districts in the Newtown area are postponing games, although we don't have the specific schools at this time." The CIAC released a prepared statement Friday afternoon and it encourages individual schools to cooperate with colleagues if postponements are desired.
