Police charge driver who struck woman in Strip District
Dec 12, 2012 (The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --
Pittsburgh police have charged a man accused of driving away after hitting a pedestrian in the Strip District on Tuesday,
Police charged Brian Jamieson, 61, of Niagara Falls with being in an accident involving a death or personal injury. Jamieson was arraigned on the charge Wednesday morning at Pittsburgh Municipal Court and released on a nonmonetary bond, online court records show.
Judith Kollar, 53, of West Mifflin died at Allegheny General Hospital after she was struck by three vehicles while crossing at Smallman and 14th streets. A driver turning from 14th onto Smallman told police he felt a hit to the left front of his vehicle and saw the woman fall into the eastbound lane of Smallman, according to a criminal complaint filed against Jamieson. The driver of a white box truck hit Kollar and kept going, and then she was struck by another sports utility vehicle, police said.
Police used a video from the Heinz History Center to capture a photo of the white box truck, and identified it as belonging to Flora Pack Inc. The company told investigators that Jamieson had been in Pittsburgh and was returning on Interstate 79, the complaint said.
Jamieson pulled to the side of the highway and met with investigators. He told police he was on Smallman, but did not admit to hitting Kollar, the complaint said.
Police searched the box truck and found evidence of contact with a pedestrian under the vehicle, the complaint said.
Robert Whitenect, finance controller for Flora Pack, said Jamieson has been a driver for the company for at least 10 years and has never had any previous issues.
"We're fully cooperating with the police," Whitenect said. "It's truly an unfortunate incident and we just want to get to the bottom of it."
Whitenect referred further comment to Jamieson's attorney, John Zotter. He could not be immediately reached for comment,
