Kehagias earns All-American honor for second time

SANFORD, Nov 30, 2012 (The Sanford Herald - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- For the second straight year, Southern Lee shortstop Jared Kehagias has earned a place on the Under Armour Pre-Season All-American Team.

The honor, which includes an invite to the Under Armour All-America Pre-Season Tournament in Tuscon, Ariz. in January, comes shortly after Kehagias, a Cavalier senior, signed a baseball scholarship offer from North Carolina Central.

Southern Lee head coach David Miller has been with the Cavs and Kehagias for going on three years. All-American awards and a Division I scholarship are special for any player talented enough to earn them. It's extra special for Kehagias though because of his work ethic and how he respects the game, Miller says.

"I'll be out working on the field or something and Jared will be out there working, hitting off the tee," Miller said.

"He'll call or text me, 'hey, can I take some grounders or can you throw (batting practice) '" Kehagias works hard at improving his game. He also studies the best in the game.

"He'll come in during the season, or any time of the pro season, and want to talk about a game, or 'did you see that at-bat by Derek Jeter or whomever ' He's always watching and talking baseball," Miller said.

The three-day Under Armour Tournament, from Jan. 18-20, includes coaching from MLB scouts, who will certainly be their as scouts for their franchises as well, and two days of competition. For their own use and improvement, players will get video footage and scouting reports with grades and ratings.

Jokingly, Miller might not want his standout shortstop pouring over more tools and training info.

"Jared's the type of kid who sometimes you have to tell him, 'you have to go home now. We can get back out here tomorrow.' Or else he'd stay out there all night,' Miller said.

"As a coach, this is what you want for a kid," Miller said, "because he's someone who puts the time in and he deserves the rewards." ___ (c)2012 The Sanford Herald (Sanford, N.C.) Visit The Sanford Herald (Sanford, N.C.) at Distributed by MCT Information Services
