Presque Isle's Carmichael joins WZON radio sportscasting team
Nov 28, 2012 (Bangor Daily News - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- BANGOR, Maine -- Local sports fans will be hearing a new voice on WZON-620 AM radio broadcasts when the high school basketball and hockey seasons begin next week.
Presque Isle native Steve Carmichael will join WZON sports director Toby Nelson and Wes Hart behind the microphone.
"I'm very excited. It's a good opportunity to get some exposure," said the 23-year-old Carmichael, who will graduate with a degree in communications from the New England School of Communications in May.
Carmichael has done play-by-play for NESCOM broadcasts of Husson University football, basketball and baseball games.
He has also done University of Maine and televised NHL hockey games by himself as part of a class assignment in Nelson's play-by-play class at NESCOM.
He said he is looking forward to working with Nelson and Hart.
"I'm good friends with Wes. We have a good partnership on and off mike," said Carmichael. "And Toby is a good role model." Carmichael said he "always enjoyed sports ever since I was a kid" and played soccer and basketball at Presque Isle High School. He said he fell in love with hockey when he was "15 or so.
"A lot of my friends played hockey and their love for the game wore off on me," explained Carmichael, who has been told by Nelson he will be doing the bulk of the play-by-play work on their high school hockey games.
After graduating from Presque Isle High School in 2008, Carmichael attended the University of Maine at Presque Isle for a year where he studied political science.
"But my friends told me that with my knowledge of sports, I should look at going to NESCOM," Carmichael said.
"It was the best decision I've ever made," said Carmichael, who is a Pittsburgh Penguins fan and writes about the New York Knicks for the ESPN TrueHoop blog.
Nelson said he is happy to have Carmichael on board.
"He has a good voice, he knows sports and he is always well-prepared," he said.
