Louisville approved today as ACC's 14th member
Nov 28, 2012 (The Fayetteville Observer - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- The post-season shuffle of college athletic conferences continued today as Atlantic Coast Conference presidents and chancellors voted to add Louisville as a 14th member, according to published reports.
David Glenn of the ACCSports.com first confirmed the decision this morning, just after a vote by league officials during a 7 a.m. teleconference. Louisville is currently a member of the Big East Conference, which yesterday announced it was adding Tulane as a full sports member and East Carolina as a football-only member.
There was no confirmation from the ACC or Louisville, although Louisville basketball coach Rick Pitino reportedly sent out a post on Twitter commenting, "We are in." The ACC vote to add Louisville was unanimous, according to a report by The Associated Press. The AP source said ACC officials also considered adding Connecticut and Cincinnati before settling on Louisville.
The move was the ACC's answer to Maryland's decision last week to depart the league for membership in the Big Ten Conference. The Terrapins were an original member of the ACC, which began in 1957.
Louisville will likely join the ACC in 2014, the same time Maryland is expected to make the jump to the Big Ten.
