Beckley native Reed resigns from Miami
Nov 22, 2012 (The Register-Herald - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Beckley native David Reed, a former compliance director at Marshall and the University of Pittsburgh, has resigned as Associate Athletic Director at the University of Miami. He will take the same position at the University of Kansas.
In an e-mail regarding the move, Reed thanked the late Paul Dee, former UM athletic director, and current deputy athletic director Tony Hernandez, from whom he "learned a great deal about the business of intercollegiate athletics during my time at UM." "I appreciate the mentoring I received from (former AD) Kirby Hocutt (now at Texas Tech), (Dr.) Clyde McCoy (Miami professor) and (interim AD) Blake James during my time here as well," wrote Reed. "The University of Miami is a special place, and I will always know that I am better for being here and experiencing it." The university is still feeling the effects of a major scandal uncovered by Yahoo! Sports in Aug. 2011 involving rogue booster Nevin Shapiro. Now serving time in prison for his role in a $930 million Ponzi scheme, Shapiro revealed that he provided inadmissible benefits to more than 70 Hurricane student-athletes from 2002-2010.
The school announced earlier this week that it has issued a self-imposed postseason ban on the football team for the second consecutive year.
Reed wrote in the e-mail that the Shapiro scandal was not involved in his decision to take a new job.
"This move has 100 percent to do with the opportunity afforded to me at Kansas and nothing else," he wrote.
Reed graduated from Woodrow Wilson and received a bachelor of science degree in environmental studies at Mountain State University. He then earned a Master of Science degree in athletic administration from Marshall.
He held compliance director positions at Pitt and Marshall before leaving for Miami in 2007.
He will start his new role in Lawrence, Kan., on Dec. 10.
