Armed robbers arrested after phone call

Nov 07, 2012 (Sun Sentinel - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- A simple phone call was all that was needed to land two armed robbery suspects in jail.

The Fort Lauderdale men, Michael Livingston, 21, and Justin Smith, 20, were arrested Tuesday morning about two hours after police said they robbed a man of his cellphone at gunpoint in the 1700 block of Northwest 15th Ave.

Fort Lauderdale Police Officer Jan Caldera spotted the two men walking in the area and noticed they matched the description of the robbery suspects, according arrest reports. Smith sports a tear-drop tattoo on his right cheek, while Livingston has a large tattoo on his neck, according to arrest reports.

Caldera detained the men and noted that Smith was carrying an iPhone that rang after the officer called the robbery victim's phone number. Livingston was carrying a black BB gun that was used in the robbery, according to the report.

The victim in the case later made positive identifications of the two robbers, according to Caldera.

Both men appeared in bond court on Wednesday and are each facing one count of armed robbery.

Livingston's criminal record includes an attempted murder charge in 2006. He was sentenced in June 2010 and released from prison in February of this year, records show. Smith's lengthy criminal record includes several robbery charges.
