TokBox Launches World's First WebRTC Solution for iOS

SAN FRANCISCO, CA, Nov 06, 2012 (MARKETWIRE via COMTEX) -- TokBox, a Telefonica Digital company, today released OpenTok on WebRTC, making OpenTok the first platform to enable anyone to build high quality video chats using WebRTC-enabled browsers. For the first time, it is now possible to build two-way video between WebRTC-enabled browsers and iOS devices, solving a major barrier for many developers and corporations who wish to provide a high quality experience to their users across devices.

OpenTok on WebRTC was launched to coincide with Google's release of Chrome 23 and works seamlessly with the new browser, which is the first to natively support WebRTC. So now video calls can be made between people on Chrome browsers, and also between a person on Chrome and someone on an iOS devices.

As part of its vision to enable face-to-face video communication across all devices, TokBox also unveiled support for Android. The company added an early access release of its OpenTok Android SDK into OpenTok Labs, allowing developers to add video chat into Android apps with only a few lines of code.

Bridgestone Golf is the first organization to use OpenTok on WebRTC, leveraging it as part of a roll-out of iPad-based video chat kiosks to 1,000 stores across the US. Bridgestone's B-FIT Video Chat Kiosk helps golfers select the perfect ball by connecting them live with one of Bridgestone's ball-fitting experts.

Dan Murphy, Vice President of Marketing - Bridgestone Golf, Inc., commented: "We realize that when consumers walk into a store looking for golf balls, they may be overwhelmed by choice, so live in-store consultation creates a more rewarding buying experience. Using OpenTok on WebRTC means our Kiosks offer a high quality engagement for our customers and consultants, which we were able to build and deploy rapidly." TokBox CEO Ian Small commented: "Live video communications is increasingly a mainstream service, but fragmentation of devices and browsers is causing problems for many developers. OpenTok is becoming the glue that interconnects all the elements so anyone adding face-to-face video to their service doesn't need to worry about whether their users can connect; it will just work everywhere." This is the first set of products released by TokBox since its acquisition by Telefonica Digital last month.

Carlos Domingo, TokBox Chairman and Telefonica Digital Director of Product Development & Innovation: "TokBox has extended its lead in the development of WebRTC solutions, and in doing so has also solved a major pain point for many developers who want to offer two-way video between browsers and iOS devices. As we work to bring TokBox's solutions together with our BlueVia ecosystem, developers will have the world's most comprehensive set of communications APIs at their disposal." OpenTok has been used by more than 50,000 organizations to add live face to face communications to their site, including American Idol, Major League Baseball, Diet Coke, Ford, Doritos, Bridgestone and Double Robotics.
