Skyera and Everspin Partner to Significantly Improve Memory Reliability in Solid-State Storage Systems

CHANDLER, Ariz. --(Business Wire)--

Everspin Technologies, the global leader in developing and manufacturing magnetic-based memory (MRAM), is providing MRAM technology to Skyera to supercharge memory applications on its newly announced solid-state storage system. This is the industry's first all solid-state storage appliance that uses MRAM to provide customers with ultimate reliability for their critical data storage infrastructures.

Using Everspin MRAM in conjunction with Skyera's MLC NAND Flash-based enterprise solid-state storage systems eliminates the drawbacks of capacitor-backed RAM (News - Alert) solutions to provide customers with enhanced data center fault recovery, reduced system downtime and lower total cost of ownership.

"Companies are increasingly turning to Flash-based storage systems to achieve greater performance of their applications but often must balance enhanced performance with issues that may burden such volatile systems," said Joseph Unsworth, research vice president at Gartner (News - Alert). "Companies that can leverage technology that takes volatility out of the equation at the storage and memory level will also widen the opportunity for solid-state storage deployments for customers that demand highly reliable environments."

Everspin MRAM combines the best features of non-volatile memory and RAM to deliver truly non-volatile RAM enabling powr fail protection. By enhancing data center and networking fault recovery, MRAM can reduce system downtime and also simplify system design providing an overall lower total cost of ownership. Compared to alternative non-volatile RAM solutions, MRAM eliminates the need for external components such as resistors, capacitors, batteries or super-capacitors including additional power fail logic circuitry. The elimination of these components improves data fidelity and system form factor while providing the most reliable solution at the overall lowest cost.

"Skyera is the latest enterprise-storage leader to choose Everspin's MRAM technology to replace capacitor backed RAM," said Phill LoPresti, president and CEO of Everspin. "For a company like Skyera to incorporate our technology into its stack shows their commitment to overcoming reliability issues on the storage side and providing the best possible user experience."

Skyera's enterprise solid-state storage system is based entirely on 19/20 nanometer consumer Multi Level Cell (MLC) NAND Flash at a system price of less than $3 per gigabyte before compression and deduplication. The compact half-depth 1u form factor sports a staggering 44 terabytes of high performance, low latency native capacity for the most demanding Big Data, analytics and virtualization applications. It was designed from the ground up to incorporate the most innovative technology available to yield the 100 times life amplification required to achieve enterprise reliability and endurance requirements.

"We are not simply providing the same class of storage systems previously introduced, throwing some Flash into a box and hoping it will be enough to convince enterprises that they now have something to suit their exact needs," said Radoslav Danilak, Skyera CEO. "We are optimizing each and every component of the system, and Everspin MRAM allows us to overcome any point of failure within the system memory while providing the best possible performance to supercharge enterprise-class applications."

Flash Memory Summit

The Skyera solid-state storage system featuring Everspin MRAM technology will be shown publicly for the first time at the upcoming Flash Memory Summit (FMS) Aug. 21 - 23 in Santa Clara, Calif. In addition, Everspin will be chairing the MRAM panel on Wednesday, Aug. 22, which includes a presentation by Everspin titled "Enabling Write Cache with ST-MRAM," and is presenting as part of the "Life Beyond Flash: New Non-Volatile Memory Technologies" panel on Thursday, Aug. 23.
