Arizona Western College will begin offering Kendo, a Japanese martial art, beginning in September.
The classes will take place on Fridays from Sept. 7 through November in the AWC Gym room 115 on the main campus.

"Kendo, which means 'way of the sword,' is a traditional, popular sport in Japan, and is of samurai origin. The focus of the course will be on the basic technical and mental skills associated with the discipline of Kendo. Emphasis will be placed on physical conditioning, mental discipline and self-awareness," stated AWC. "It is a fun course, and people ages 14 and up of all fitness levels are welcome as long as they are in reasonable good health. The purchase of a Shinai, a weapon that represents a Japanese sword and is used for practice and competition in Kendo, is required."
Contact Kendo instructor Francisco Villa at francisco.villa@nau.edu for information on how to order the equipment.
The fee for the course is $59, which does not include the cost of the Shinai.
