Olympics are an online hit for NBC
Aug 03, 2012 (Los Angeles Times - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Despite ongoing complaints about NBC's coverage of the Olympics, the 2012 London Games are proving to be a hit for the network on TV and online.
The prime-time TV coverage is getting the highest-ever ratings for an Olympics, with the opening weekend drawing 35.8 million total viewers in prime time.
But an even faster growing audience apparently exists online, where NBC is streaming the events live (or at least with less of a tape delay than the network broadcast).
So far during the Olympics' first week, there have been 75 million total videos streamed from NBCOlympics.com and the NBC Olympics apps. According to NBC, that's up 182% from the Beijing Olympics in 2008.
The network also reports that there have been 34 million live streams (which is already more live streams than during the entire Beijing Olympics), 744 million page views and 31.5 million unique users on the website alone.
The two NBC apps, "NBC Olympics" and "NBC Olympics Live Extra" have received more than 6 million downloads, the network said.
The most-watched Olympic event online so far has been the gold-medal-winning performance of the U.S. women's gymnastics team, which drew over 1.4 million live streams, according to NBC.
