BRIEF: Store employee uses baseball bat to stop burglar with underwear on his head

Jul 21, 2012 (The Oklahoman - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- A Dollar General employee used a baseball bat to subdue a robber wearing underwear over his head, court papers show.

The worker was in the back room of the store at 33 SE 59 on Sunday when he heard the sound of glass breaking, according to a probable cause affidavit filed Friday in Oklahoma County District Court.

The employee looked at a video surveillance monitor and saw a man behind the checkout register. The man was wearing black shorts, a red shirt and gloves. He also used a pair of men's black underwear to cover his face, police reported.

The robber had thrown a brick through a glass door to gain entry about 5:35 p.m.

The worker approached the robber, who was still behind the counter putting DVD players in a bag. He used a bat to take the man into custody, police said.

Horatio Coates, 46, was arrested and booked into the Oklahoma County jail on a burglary complaint. He remained in custody Friday, with bail set at $12,000, a jail official said.
