Demand for bandwidth will escalate during Olympics, warns Nexans

Jul 12, 2012 (M2 PRESSWIRE via COMTEX) -- The results from a recent Nexans survey indicate that nearly 40 per cent of people intend to watch live Olympic coverage at their computers as events unfold this July and August.

There will be more than 2,500 hours of live Olympic TV coverage on offer this summer and the BBC has expanded its streaming capacity to accommodate inevitable increases in people watching content online and across connected devices. With many of the most popular events and medal ceremonies taking place during working hours, IT Managers must ensure they are aware of issues arising from bandwidth, as it struggles to cope with the demands placed upon it.

While it is not suggested that people should be watching the Olympics at work, and many companies may have blocked channels, it has also been recognised that the increased risk of unauthorised absence in the workplace is a real business concern. As a consequence many companies plan to provide some access for responsible viewing.

Nexans have created a paper discussing the short and long term solutions to support the ever-increasing demand for bandwidth, as a result of such demands.
