BRIEF: SWIMMING AND DIVING: Odessa High grad Gibson competing for Olympic bid
Jun 27, 2012 (Odessa American - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Odessa High School graduate Madison Gibson is scheduled to swim Wednesday in the 200-meter butterfly qualifying race at the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team Trials in Omaha, Neb.
Gibson, who has one season of eligibility remaining with the University of Texas men's program, is one of 145 swimmers qualified to compete in the 200 butterfly at CenturyLink Center.
There are 15 heats scheduled and 16 swimmers qualify for the semifinals later in the day, with the final scheduled for Thursday.
Gibson -- a three-time state qualifier for Odessa High in 2007, 2008 and 2009 -- earned his spot at the trials in the 200 fly with a time of 2 minutes, 3.47 seconds, in August 2011 at the Conoco Phillips National Championships.
He is one of four members from the 2011-12 Longhorns men's team scheduled to swim Wednesday along with Neil Caskey, Tripp Cooper and Jackson Wilcox. Michael Phelps, the world record holder in the event, is the No. 1 seed.
Gibson also is scheduled to compete Saturday in the 100 butterfly qualifying.
