Despite rain, race cars hit Belle Isle track on Free Prix Day

Jun 01, 2012 (Detroit Free Press - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Steady rain is falling this morning on Belle Isle -- site of Sunday's Chevrolet Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix -- but cars are out on the track, with a couple already spinning on Free Prix Day.

Practice for the Pirelli World Challenge Series began at about 8 a.m.

As of 9:35, Grand-Am Rolex cars were running, a bit slower than usual -- the generally slick conditions and puddles on the turns are keeping speeds down.

Firestone Indy Lights practice is scheduled to begin at 10:55, with the big, poweful IZOD IndyCars expected to be out on the street circuit at noon.

It's the first time we've heard the roars of racing machines on Belle Isle since 2008, when the ailing economy caused the cancellation of the race.

Sunday's IndyCar race is scheduled to start at 3:30 p.m. and will be televised on ABC (Channel 7 in Detroit).
