Several Robberies Reported to Hartford Police
HARTFORD, Jun 01, 2012 (The Hartford Courant - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --
Several robberies and an attempted robbery were reported to city police this week.
A cab driver was nearly robbed early Thursday on Congress Street by two passengers who pulled a handgun and demanded money, police said. As the suspects got out of the vehicle, the driver accelerated away, and the suspects fled, he told police.
The driver said he had picked up the passengers in East Hartford and brought them to 26 Congress St. Investigators may be able to identify the suspects using a surveillance video from the cab, police said.
One suspect was described to police as a "fat-looking" 20- to 25-year-old who wore a red hoodie and had a firearm. The other was 20-25 years old, about 5-foot-10 with black hair in braids and a black hoodie.
Earlier this week, a street robbery took place at Bank of America at 550 Farmington Ave., police said. The victim told police he was using the ATM Wednesday night when a man, implying he had a gun, demanded that he withdraw cash, police said.
The suspect took the cash and fled on foot, heading north on Whitney Street. He is described as a man in his 40s, about 6 feet tall and 300 pounds with a small afro and scruffy facial hair. He wore black pants and a black T-shirt with white paint splatter on it, and walked with a waddle, possibly because of his weight, police said.
Also on Wednesday, a man was robbed of his computer and backpack while waiting for his mother at Union Station just after midnight, police said. The victim told police he was using his laptop computer when two suspects stole his belongings and one of them pulled out a knife.
Images of the suspects were captured by surveillance cameras. One was 15 to 20 years old, about 5-foot-7 and 170 pounds with dark hair in braids, dark pants and a gray sport coat with red and black stripes. The other, also 15 to 20 years old, was about 5-foot-8 and 150 pounds with short, dark hair, tan pants and a blue jacket.
Another robbery was reported at the Dave Matthews concerts Saturday at 9 p.m. at the Comcast Theatre, 61 Savitt Way.
The victim reported on Wednesday that he had been attacked from behind by five unknown men and his wallet and cellphone taken, police said. The suspects fled. The victim said he would not be able to identify them because he was attacked from behind and because he was intoxicated at the time, police said.
