Missing student case similar to Lauren Spierer's turns up in Louisiana
May 27, 2012 (Herald-Times - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --
Bloomington police have contacted officers in Louisiana in regard to their recent search for a female college student, who has been missing for a week.
Louisiana authorities are searching for Michaela "Mickey" Shunick, a 22-year-old anthropology major at the University of Louisiana.
She had been at a house May 19 in a neighborhood popular with college students and left the home around 2 a.m. on a black bicycle, according to the Associated Press. Shunick is described as white, with blond hair. She is 5-foot-1 and 115 pounds.
Detectives in Lafayette report surveillance video from a local business shows someone on a bicycle the morning Shunick was last seen, and they believe it was Shunick. Investigators are trying to learn more about a white pickup truck also seen on the video.
When asked if Bloomington police have contacted Louisiana authorities to see if there are any connections with the disappearance of Indiana University student Lauren Spierer, Capt. Joe Qualters responded in an email Saturday that they had, but were waiting for a return call.
Spierer, then age 20, was reportedly last seen about 4:30 a.m. June 3, 2011, at the intersection of 11th Street and College Avenue, walking home alone toward Smallwood Plaza after a night out at Kilroy's Sports Bar and a few downtown apartments.
Bloomington police ruled out a white truck caught on video surveillance that had driven by the area Spierer was last reportedly seen. Police at first thought the truck circled the block suspiciously, but later determined a time discrepancy between video cameras was the reason the truck appeared to go by twice.
Investigators tracked down the owner of the truck, after releasing photographs and receiving more than 500 tips, and determined he had driven by the Smallwood Plaza area just one time about 4:15 in the morning of June 3, and had picked up an employee.
