Sportiiiis, New Heads up Display Feedback System for Athletes, Launches

January 10, 2012

(SPORTS TECHNOLOGY)

A nifty gadget just hit the market that’s sure to please athletes looking to keep themselves informed of their performance during workouts, and it’s coming out of CES (News - Alert) 2012.

A heads up display (HUD) known as Sportiiiis (sport-eyes, if you’re curious) attaches to glasses, be it sunglasses or eyeglasses, and provides up to the moment feedback without having to take your eyes off the road.

For just $199, the device almost looks like a headset instead of an exercise gadget, but it does so much more. With a multi-colored LED boom, athletes are given instant visual feedback of workout and racing data including heart rate, cadence, power, speed, pace and other ANT+ compatible data.

The Sportiiiis device sits just on the lower edge of the lens in the user’s peripheral vision. There’s also a speaker for audio cues.

For cyclists, Sportiiiies can show turns, rises, and descents ahead of time. The cyclist could then choose the right gear, power output, and position, bettering their riding time over all.

Up to eight sensors can be paired with the Sportiiiis, with the ability to switch between them with a double tap of the unit. These functions can all be programmed in from 4iiii’s upcoming app. The Sportiiis will be available soon from 4iiii’s website, and are on sale at their CES 2012 booth in the North Hall’s ANT+ Pavilion.

Accessories for the device include a FootPod, Bike Sensor and Heart Rate Strap, also available on 4iiii’s site.

When paired with a heart rate strap, the Sportiiiis system will create a custom setup for how the LEDs will respond to your heart rate, which is then downloaded to the system. Lights will then blink according to your heart rate data, informing you if you’re in your target zone or not.

Sportiiiis is certainly a game changer (no pun intended) for other exercise gadgets, like pedometers and heart rate watches.
