Next-Gen Digital Broadcasting of FIFA World Cup Now a Reality

July 07, 2014

(SPORTS TECHNOLOGY)

The 2014 World Cup is among the world's first sporting events to be filmed and broadcast in ultra HD TV technology. And Sagemcom and Broadcom (News - Alert) Corporation can take a lot of credit for that.  By leveraging Broadcom's video decoder technology, Sagemcom intends to enable a live broadcast of select 2014 World Cup events in ultra high definition.

Broadcom’s BCM7445 video decoder and BCM7252 System-on-a-Chip (SoC) technology will be used for that purpose, enabling fans to get stunning picture quality. Broadcom will simultaneously deliver four transcoded HD video streams over IP for content on any screen.

Sagemcom (News - Alert), a dominant player in broadband terminals and set-top boxes in Europe, together with Broadcom has thus set the stage for faster download of UltraHD content, assuring users of more detail and a more immersive experience.

Ultra HD filming, transmission and broadcast requires a significant increase in bandwidth; Broadcom’s video decoder solutions, along with its high-efficiency video codec, will enable more efficient operator content delivery, higher resolution – 3840 x 2160 as compared to 1920x1080 for HD, superb picture quality and faster over-the-top services through existing high-speed data pipes. With bandwidth usage down by 50 percent, users can download ultra HD content easily and quickly.

Broadcom notes that BCM7445 is the first step to delivering UltraHD TV into the home with the performance and picture quality needed for the evolution in multi-screen connected home entertainment.

According to market information advisory firm DisplaySearch, the 2014 World Cup is expected to boost sales of Ultra HD TVs. Also FIFA has noted that the group stages of the 2014 international soccer tournament have broken television viewing records across most nations. Next generation digital broadcasting is definitely on the cards as football fans look to enhance their viewing experience.

So even if you can’t go to Brazil to watch the semi-finals and the final, Sagemcom together with Broadcom can make viewers feel as if they are actually in the stands watching the World Cup.
