(SPORTS TECHNOLOGY)

With the launch of the barker channel, Sportsnews, Roger digital cable customers will now have access to a 'round the clock' sports-themed promotional service. This industry-first channel will be available to customers at no additional cost.

"Sportsnews is the first cable service of its kind in Canada . It's where customers can learn about our sports programming as well as what's happening in the world of sports - 24/7 and right at their fingertips," said Anthony Antonelli , senior director, Sports and On Demand Services, Rogers Communications, in a press release.

Rogers Communications (News - Alert) is one of Canada's largest providers of cable television, high speed Internet, and telephony services. The new channel is available to all Rogers digital cable customers in Ontario and Atlantic Canada on channel 999 in both SD and HD with immediate effect.

The introduction of Sportsnews is a part of the ongoing commitment that Rogers Communications shows toward passionate sports fans who are always on the lookout for news and information about matches, schedules and breaking news about players.

Fans now have a ready-made channel that will give them scores of statistics, heaps of information about professional leagues and other fantasy information. Fans can always stay connected with everything that is happening in the sports arena.

Antonelli likened the Sportsnews channel to other recent innovations that are quite popular and noted that the Sportsnews Channel would enable sports fans to be up to date anywhere and at anytime.

"Whether you're at a sports bar with friends, the gym, or at home in front of your big screen TV, Sportsnews will keep you up-to-date with the day's key match-ups, headlines, scores, stats and breaking news through a real-time Twitter (News - Alert) feed,” said Antonelli in a statement.

In other news, Rogers Communications announced that it, along with Bell Canada (News - Alert), is jointly acquiring a net 75 percent stake in Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment from the Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan. The investment advances Rogers' strategy to deliver highly sought- after content anywhere, anytime, on any platform across its broadband and wireless networks and its media assets, while strengthening the value of its sports brand, Sportsnet.
