SureWest Sports Show Announces Athletes of the Year Award Recipients

SureWest Communications (News - Alert) has announced winners of the third annual SureWest Sports Show Athletes of the Year award.

Winners named for the 2010-11 season are Belle Obert (Del Oro): SureWest Sports Show Female Athlete of the Year and Kyle Howarth (Granite Bay): SureWest Sports Show Male Athlete of the Year.

The SureWest Sports Show is a one of a kind Sacramento-area program highlighting local youth and high school sports featuring the latest news and analysis. News about where the show will be next is constantly updated on surewestsports.com.

Tuesday’s episode will present excerpts of interviews with the Athlete of the Year award winners.

Obert helped lead the Golden Eagles to the volleyball CIF Division II Semi-Finals and also played basketball for Del Oro, helping them win the Sierra Foothill League title for the seventh consecutive year. She was also selected league co-MVP, First Team All-League and First Team All-Metro while leading the team to both the Division II and NorCal championship basketball games and was selected to take part in the highly regarded Optimist All-Star game for both volleyball and basketball. A leader in the sports arena, Obert held a 4.2 GPA and has been actively involved in community programs such as "Crutches to Haiti" and "Soles 4 Souls." Obert won a volleyball scholarship and will attend Butler University.

In a release, Del Oro girl's volleyball head coach Stuart Kageta said "Belle was a great leader for our volleyball team, both on and off the court. She has amazing concentration on the court and made positive things happen no matter what the circumstance."

Howarth, a First Team All-League selection in three sports at Granite Bay High School in 2010-11, earned First Team All-League honors for the third-consecutive year in soccer and led the Grizzlies to a number five national ranking as they won the Sierra Foothill League Championship and Division II CIF Championship. In basketball, he led the Sierra Foothill League with 8.6 rebounds while averaging 8.4 points and made his mark in volleyball by leading the Grizzlies to the SFL co-league championship as the team's Offensive MVP. Howarth held a 4.2 GPA and will attend UC-Davis as a pre-med student.

Granite Bay boy's volleyball head coach Bruce Honberger stated that "Kyle Howarth is an outstanding young man, and in all my years of coaching, I have never come across a better all-around athlete, student and person. He exemplifies the student athlete."
