Trail Blazers Fans Will Have New Mobile App, Better Wi-Fi at Moda Center
Sporting venues are making big investments in IT to keep their fans engaged while they are watching the game. The Sochi 2014 Winter Olympic Games, for example, is spending an estimated $500 million – a record for telecommunications for the Winter Games. With the right apps and Wi-Fi connectivity, stadiums can make the experience of attending a game or any other event more enjoyable. The NBA's Portland Trailblazers have installed an enhanced Wi-Fi service and developed a new application for the Moda Center, the team's home arena, to keep their fans engaged.
The new Wi-Fi service by Aruba Networks will give fans total access when they are in the venue during a home game. The Aruba WLAN is designed to give the thousands of fans in the arena a secure and reliable connection no matter where they are in the arena.
The service is going to be available for free inside the Moda Center thanks in part to a collaboration with local Toyota dealers. The Toyota Free Wi-Fi will let fans upload pictures to their favorite social media sites such as Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter (News - Alert) during the game and interact with each other using the team's app.
- News feeds
- Gametracker with live up-to-date stats, box scores, play-by-play and more
- Live in-game shot charts and heat maps for each team
- Game Flow feature allowing fans to read play-by-play details during and after games
- Live in-game video feeds, replays and highlights – an option available only in the arena
"We’ve invested tremendous time and effort in a redesign of our mobile app based on input from fans and our own quest for some amazing functionality. The fact that we’re also activating better performing Wi-Fi access creates an exciting in-game web experience at the Moda Center," said Trail Blazers President and CEO Chris McGowan.
The Trail Blazers organization wanted to ensure the 20,000 fans at the Moda Center will be able to access the network without any issues. The unified wired and wireless infrastructure from Aruba delivers high-speed bandwidth capable of dealing with a dense environment such as the arena without any delay or interruptions. There are more than 400 access points and antennas deployed throughout the arena to support current and future communications technology.
"Providing Wi-Fi solutions for public-facing enterprises is a growing area for Aruba Networks (News - Alert) and we look forward to helping Moda Center continue to expand its Wi-Fi capabilities. The Moda Center is another example of how Aruba’s WLAN is enabling large public venue owners to securely, reliably and cost-effectively deliver a high-quality Wi-Fi experience for its thousands of event attendees," said Ben Gibson (News - Alert), chief marketing officer of Aruba Networks.
