NBC Sports Group Teams up with Yahoo! on Sports Content Deal

December 10, 2012

(SPORTS TECHNOLOGY)

NBC Sports Group and Yahoo! announced a partnership last night that will combine two of the largest sports sites on the Internet. NBC Sports will combine its digital assets and television promotion, with Yahoo! Sports reporting content and coverage of all big events.

With this alliance, NBC hopes to generate more online traffic as it has been looking to do. Yahoo! Sports, the second-largest sports website on the Web, will also get more television promotion, which has been its focal point for a while.

Yahoo! has similar agreements with CNBC and ABC News. NBC Sports and Yahoo! Sports will remain separate entities, with separate cites and newsrooms – similar to the CNBC and ABC News arrangements.

“Yahoo! provides a massive scale for the NBC Sports Group,” Mark Lazarus, the chairman of that group, said in an interview by phone on Sunday.

NBC will now be able to increase its digital presence, as well as its fantasy coverage. In the agreement, Yahoo! Sports, the leader across all fantasy sports platforms, will become the exclusive provider for all of NBC Sports’ fantasy games.

Yahoo! will also have access to all of NBC Sports’ online content and videos.

The biggest way NBC Sports will be able to increase its digital presence will be through the live streaming on Yahoo! Sports. Yahoo! will now include links to live coverage of NBC Sports events including Sunday Night Football and NHL games, once the NHL lockout is lifted.

Another key feature will be the developments of original made-for-Web content that will appear on both Yahoo! Sports and NBCsports.com. As part of the original programming, Yahoo! will also gain access to some of NBC’s on-air talent, including Bob Costas and others.

Also included in the partnership is Rivals.com, all NBC Sports Regional networks, as well as the Golfchannel.com and Allisports.com.
