Spotcycle Supports New International Bike-share Systems

May 18, 2012

(SPORTS TECHNOLOGY)

8D Technologies’ bike-share mobile application, Spotcycle, is now available to several new North American and international bike-share systems. Bicycle bike-share users, including those in Denver CO, Madison WI and Fort Lauderdale (Broward) FL, will now have access to Spotcycle.

Future applications will support several other bike-share schemes, including Paris 'Vélib', Barcelona's Biking and Miami Beach's DecoBike.

According to the press release, with the help of Spotcycle, cyclists from all over the world can get the most out of their bike-share system. The application can locate bike stations on the bike share system, display bike and bike dock availability for each station, group stations into favorites for quick access, display bike path networks and allow users to even create and share their personalized bike routes.

In April 2011, Spotcycle topped the list of free mobile apps for enabling a sustainable lifestyle in the Tech section of USA Today's American Life: Green Living insert. Spotcycle is a free application and can be installed on iPhone (News - Alert), Android and BlackBerry devices.

A bicycle sharing system is a service in which bicycles are made available for shared use to individuals who do not own them.

Bicycle sharing systems can be divided into two general categories: "Community Bike programs," organized mostly by local community groups or non-profit organizations, and "Smart Bike programs," implemented by government agencies, sometimes in a public-private partnership.

The central concept of these systems is to provide free or affordable access to bicycles for short-distance trips in an urban area as an alternative to motorized public transportation or private vehicles, effectively reducing traffic congestion, noise and air pollution. Bicycle sharing systems have also been cited as a way to solve the "last mile" problem and connect users to public transit networks.

Creator of Spotcycle, 8D Technologies develops advanced, intelligent wireless, Machine-to-Machine (M2M), multi-function point of sale (POS) solutions. 8D's unique green urban transportation management and payment solutions include the award-winning city parking system (8DAPMS). This solution features 100 percent solar-powered wireless terminals that can manage both street parking and municipal bike-sharing services.
