Verizon Will Continue Delivering Wireless for NHL and NHLPA
Verizon Wireless (News - Alert) will renew its partnership with the NBC Sports Group, the National Hockey League and the National Hockey League Player’s Association to provide exclusive content to fans via the Verizon edition of NHL Gamecenter’s smartphone and tablet apps.
On the Verizon NHL Gamecenter Premium app, users will have the ability to stream programming that provides them with on-location access, real-time scores, expert analysis, team press conference coverage and live look-ins.
“The NHLPA is pleased to be renewing our partnership with Verizon Wireless,” said Mike Ouellet, NHLPA chief of Business Affairs. “Today’s announcement is a positive one for hockey fans across the United States who will be able to enjoy exclusive player-generated content delivered directly to their mobile devices.”
The app will contain new features, such as NBC’s Star Cam, which adds additional footage and angles to games in action. Users will also have access to NBC’s “Inside the Glass” analysis and in-game replays not available during the live on-air broadcast. In addition, fans can watch the NHL Network’s signature show, “NHL on the Fly,” and can watch “Plays of the Week” video on demand.
“With more fans using mobile phones and tablets to access NHL content, we are focused on growing this area to provide the best customer experience possible,” said Keith Wachtel, senior vice president of Integrated Sales at the NHL.
The terms of the renewal will provide Verizon with exclusive marketing rights as the NHL’s “Official Wireless Service Provider” in the U.S., with exclusive marketing rights for major NHL events, such as the NHL Winter Classic, NHL All-Star Weekend in the U.S., NHL Awards and NHL Lester Patrick Awards. Verizon will also have a significant marketing presence on all NBC Sports platforms, including broadcast, cable and digital.
