Tim Tebow's Heroics Set Twitter Sports Record
(SPORTS TECHNOLOGY)
More and more, Twitter (News - Alert) is becoming one of those sites you can look at to see what the real happening stories of the day are. More and more, sports are starting to become quite the staple for Twitter as well. Trending topics and the sports world were on a collision course last Sunday when Denver Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow hit an open receiver with a nice pass. That receiver took the ball 80 yards for a wild card playoff game winning touchdown in overtime.
Once that play happened, Twitter went a little crazy. In fact, Twitter went so crazy that Tebow now has another accomplishment to put on his resume. Following Tebow’s pass, mentions of his name set a new Twitter record as he was mentioned in an improbable 9,420 tweets per second. That many tweets, in so short a span of time, means that Tebow has set the record for a sports topic on Twitter. Tebow may not yet have achieved the overall record of 11,349 that was reached during an airing of the anime series Castle in the Sky.
Until Tebow’s pass, Beyonce’s announcement of her pregnancy had been the second most tweeted in the company’s history, but knocking the pop goddess out of that spot is just another of the young football phenom’s accomplishments. Before Tebow, the most talked about sports even on Twitter was the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup Final which got 7,100 tweets per second. Best of all for Tebow is that while he may have set the record for sports tweets, he was also among the most trending topics 24 hours after the game was over.
Tebow is quite the topic for discussion everywhere. While people have had debate after debate after debate as to whether or not he is the real deal, it appears those discussions are going strong on the Internet as well. Whether the public wants to love or hate Tebow, there can really be no doubt that not only do his exploits drive conversation on the real world, they also clearly drive the conversation on the World Wide Web.
