Novell Chosen for Data Center, Software at Asian Games

January 24, 2011

(SPORTS TECHNOLOGY)

Novell (News - Alert) officials have announced that the 16th Asian Games chose the company's Linux and enterprise management technologies to implement a data center and software distribution management system to support the event.

With 45 nations, 476 events in 42 sports and more than 9,500 competing athletes, the Asian Games is one of the largest sports events in the world. The Guangzhou Asian Games Organizing Committee used SUSE Linux Enterprise, Novell Cloud Manager and Novell ZENworks Configuration Management to enable uniform deployment and provide management of all terminal devices, company officials say.

Sen Ming Chang, managing director of Novell East Asia, said the three products represent "the advantages of Novell products-openness, multi-platform support, automation, reliability and safety. We were able to use these advantages to maximize our contribution to the Games."

In November TMC's (News - Alert) Stefanie Mosca wrote that Attachmate Corporation, led by Francisco Partners, Golden Gate Capital and Thoma Bravo, announced the signing of an agreement to acquire Novell, Inc.

The acquisition came with a purchase price of $6.10 per common share in cash. The total transaction is valued at approximately $2.2 billion.

"This acquisition will add significant assets to our current portfolio holdings and the Novell and SUSE brands will allow us to deliver even more value to customers," said Jeff Hawn, chairman and CEO of Attachmate Corporation. "We have great respect for Novell's business, its employees and its commitment to customers. Moreover, we look forward to maintaining and further strengthening Novell and SUSE solutions to meet market demands."

As part of the transaction, Elliott Management Corporation, one of Novell's largest shareholders, will become an equity shareholder in Attachmate Corporation. After Novell closes, Attachmate Corporation will manage a brand portfolio consisting of Attachmate, NetIQ (News - Alert), Novell and SUSE.
